Today we explore one of the best districts in Barcelona for photography, the Born area with this interesting Photowalk.
The place was a former fishermen district in the old medieval city (the sea was closer than it is now) and the narrow streets of the area offer plenty photo opportunities.
The district’s most famous building is probably The Cathedral Santa Maria del Mar, which is surrounded by amazing corners and some curiosities of Barcelona such as both the narrowest and the shortest streets in the city. Born is now a fashionable area, the new “in” district with plenty of cafes and nice places to photograph.
Cathedral Santa Maria del Mar and surroundings were described by famous novel “Cathedral of the Sea” by Idelfonso Falcones, and once we are there will be amazed with the austerity of the building and the simplicity of design and interior decoration. The Santa Maria del Mar Basilica Rooftop tour will allow us to capture the city from above, just mind that the rooftop is reachable by a narrow spiral staircase. The narrow streets around it offer great perspectives to capture the high towers of the church. One can be captured from street Anisadeta and other from Carrer de l’Espaseria as you can see here below.
The shortest street is Carrer de l’Anisadeta, after a popular Anise that locals used to drink in the area. It is so short that perfectly fits in our photo frame and on one side includes only one house (the rose building block on the left) and a restaurant in the other side.
The narrowest street is Carrer de les Mosques (Street of Flies) which gives some idea of the sanitary situation of the street in old times that needed to be closed on both sides. With almost one meter and a half of width I imagine that the street was also closed to prevent pedestrian conflicts and collisions.
Many artists and local designers found a place in El Born, printing a peculiar character to the area and decorating the streets and façades of buildings with colourful signs, lights and flags.
El Born is full of history with ancient medieval palaces that worth more than one photo, famous museums as the Picasso museum and nice leisure areas as the Paseo del Born and the Market area. In the end we can relax at Park La Ciutadella were is the offer of renting row boats or just visit the amazing fountain located in the middle of the park.
