Rainy day photography tour in Barcelona. Ideas, tips and tricks
As usually Easter brought windy and rainy days in Barcelona and it kept raining till now, so, it dissapointed all the tourists that were looking for the famous Barcelona’s sun and warm weather. But, you know what, just because is raining doesn’t mean that you have to cancel your Barcelona photography tour.
Here we bring some ideas, tips and tricks to take advantage of your rainy day in the city.
Rain can be a clear advantage to take creative photos. If there is a harsh sun we usually play with shadows, so, in a rainy day we can play with reflections and other cool effects that we will explain here below. Less crowds in touristic places is another thing to be thankful on a rainy day in Barcelona.
Now the biggest challenge in the rain is to manage to keep your equipment dry. I don’t mean sophisticated gear, just an umbrella and a coat. The market and some covered places are always there if a heavier rain starts (which don’t happen usually in Barcelona).
Now, here some tricks:
1- Use reflections to create doble images. Those places that could look boring or iconic places that you’ve seen a thousand times on Instagram, now have a different look with wet pavement and puddles. Now you can take the entire building reflected in a mirror-like image, or taking just a portion of the reality and a big area of reflection. You can create also ideas like this photo titled “Travelers” where the image in the reflection looks like the dream of
2- Droplets on windows. If you are tired of the rain you can always seat in a cozy cafe and watch the monuments and the rain outside. Or looking the people in the cafe from outside.
3. Wet surfaces. There are corners that are always photogenic in Barcelona, but on a rainy day the interest grows with more vivid colors and nice water drawings.
4- Skies. Skies are more dramatic with thick clouds that can add a nicer look to buildings or churches, like this one in Sitges
5. More details and a softer light. You don’t need to worry about the sun and the position of your camera to avoid the hard contrasts. Light is more even and soft so you can concentrate in capture all the details and in the vivid colors that now appear with things and buildings wet. In Barcelona there are many nice places in the Gothic Quarter that are very difficult to capture in a sunny day if the main interest is the architecture due to the hard light falling in façades and towers. A rainy day is the opportunity to capture them.
6- People. To match the rain, people’s faces are also more dramatic on rainy days, they are running to shelter making it the perfect moment for a panning or a longer shutter speed with movement. Besides, umbrellas and coats add a strike of color that is very much appreciated.
When rain is over a special nice sky will appear and a warm light will cover the city. That’s another good moment to have your camera prepared to get some nice scenes.
